Brock Talks “One Year Later” with Kurt Sasso from TGT!

by Brock Heasley on January 21st, 2014

This is it! Yesterday, we kicked off “One Year Later.” Today, I go to the mic to talk with Kurt Sasso over at TGT all about it. Over the course of our conversation we covered everything from why SuperFogeys is making this radical shift to how it fits into the larger story to what it means for what’s ahead. To be honest, I probably revealed a little more than I intended. I by no means give the game away, but be prepared to have at least the first strip of Chapter 18 spoiled for you… and a bit more. Nothing so big that I regret saying it. In any case, this is a can’t miss for all true fans.

Big thanks to Kurt for having me on the show. Kurt approaches the interview as a true fan and he’s a great interviewer. He pulled some good stuff out of me.

You can listen to it all right here!

Guest Strippin’ Xmas 5–A Call for Submissions!

by Brock Heasley on December 11th, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

While this post is a bit later than usual, hopefully you guys have seen my notes under the strips saying that, yes, we are doing another Guest Strippin’ Xmas this year… provided I didn’t wait too long to tell you about it and we get enough entries!

The rules are pretty standard at this point, and you’ll find them below. This has been a good year for SF, I think, with a number of long time storylines having come to a head and some big new ones just launched. And it’s all leading to… something exceedingly cool. I saw you all fall in love with new characters (Atomic Fly) and out of love with old ones (Jerry) and I hope the fun and excitement I’ve been seeing will translate to some fun Guest Strips. You guys always crack me up with your takes on these characters and I hope you’ll just go as wild as you always do.

If you’d like to submit, here’s the specs and what you need to know:

• Submissions can be in either strip or page format. Valhalla years or SuperFogeys Origins–it’s up to you! (Just bear in mind that your stories won’t be canon.)

• Funny is good.

• Strips will run at 900 pixels across.  Please send that size or larger.  I can always scale down, but never up.

• Spy Gal naked is bad.

• Theme is up to you. We usually get some great Christmas-themed strips and I love that, but you can really do what want so long as it stays PG-appropriate. If you’re looking for a theme, how about this: The Fogeys as characters from pop and geek culture. For some reason, I really want to see that this year.

• Please include “SuperFogeys (copyright symbol) 2013 Brock Heasley” underneath the strip.

• email to: bwhheasley (at) gmail.com

• Include your name, name of your comic (if you have one) and website url (if you have one) and whatever biographical information you’d like to see posted with your strip. Promoting you is my thank you, so please make sure I have my facts straight!

• Deadline is Dec. 20th

Have at it, folks! Please ask any questions you have in the comments below.

Thanks!

New York Comic Con!

by Marc Lapierre on October 7th, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

Greetings, Fogeys Fans! Marc here to let you know that this weekend you can find me in the Big Apple at the New York Comic Con. Once again, I’ll be sharing an Artist Alley table with the lovely and talented Irma Eriksson of Imy fame. If you plan on visiting the biggest comic book and pop culture convention on the East Coast, please stop by table i6 and say “Hi”! I’ll be selling a variety of art prints of my work and taking commissions for sketches both big and small. If you come by the table dressed as a SuperFogey character, I’ll even give you a FREE sketch!

The 7th Anniversary of The SuperFogeys: Taking a Trip Back to the Verrrry Beginning

by Brock Heasley on September 23rd, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

The SuperFogeys were created on September 22nd, 2006 off of a suggestion from Tad Hansen, my fake internet friend, that I “do something stupid like a comic about superheroes in a nursing home.”

Three days later I posted the first strip as part of a five day experiment to see if  could do a daily comic strip. I didn’t really have any sort of plan or story in mind. I invented and designed characters on the fly, within the strips themselves. No color, just black and white. They weren’t even drawn very well. I was just trying to get stuff done as quickly as possible. I had so much fun doing it I extended the experiment to a second week.

I quickly realized that a pretty crazy story was starting to emerge from my collection of Superman, Robin, Dr. Sivana and Black Widow analogues. The Flash, Etrigan the Demon, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, Captain America and Maxima analogues (+10 to whomever can correctly pair up the famous [and not-so-famous] comic characters with their SuperFogeys counterparts) came a little later, along with a whole host of other characters. A motley crew if there ever was one.

Presented below, for the first time in a looooong time, is that original set of five black & white strips as they originally appeared to readers of my blog on MySpace seven years ago. You’ll notice a few differences from what you’ll find on the site today, the biggest of which are the different outfit for Captain Spectacular (changed because it too closely resembled Superman’s–especially when colored) and the omission of what is now strip #3 (it was created later after I decided to go back and color the strips and continue the story).

Big thanks to all of who have stuck with us over the years, and big thanks to those of you who discovered us a little later. You make it all worth doing. Extra, extra special thanks to Marc Lapierre, without whom The SuperFogeys would have ended years ago. I’m so glad we’re still going strong.

The SuperFogeys in… The Great Gatsby!

by Brock Heasley on August 30th, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

I was watching The Great Gatsby with my wife the other night (the 2013 version by Baz Luhrmann–incredible movie) and a thought occurred to me that Jerry and Jay Gatsby have more than a little in common. Both of them are hiding their real names and who they really are, and both of them live a life that is really just one big scheme to get a girl. Jerry has Valhalla and Gatsby has his mega house with the all the parties. Jerry wants Spy Gal, Gatsby wants Daisy. That’s just the start. You could go a lot deeper with the comparisons.

Well, scant hours after posting this thought on the SF Twitter and Facebook, SuperFan Kelsi Jane Swensen responded with this fantastic photoshop job:

From left to right, that’s Star Maiden as Myrtle Wilson, Captain Spectacular as Tom Buchanan, Spy Gal as Daisy Buchanan, Jerry as Jay Gatsby, Zurida as Jordan Baker and, uh, me as Nick Carraway, aka the narrator. I admit I laughed out loud when I saw that last one.

Great, funny work, Kelsi! Thanks for sending it in.
