NEW CHARACTER: Li’l Shorty!

by Brock Heasley on March 6th, 2014
Posted In: Uncategorized

Li'l Shorty by Marc Lapierre

Li’l Shorty is a character who was mentioned a long, long time ago but was never seen until the jump to One Year Later. I gave Marc a name and that was pretty much it. He came up with the look and the majority of the back story. Kudos, Marc. She looks great!

Here’s her bio:

Tendra Lamaar is a genius teenage inventor who has always been underestimated because of her small stature, gender and age. Deciding to steer into the skid, she created her greatest invention—the Tomlin Gauntlets she wears on her arms that allow her to shrink down to a subatomic level. The Gauntlets were particularly useful in the pre-occupation days when she solved mysteries and conducted investigations as a sort of super-powered Veronica Mars. Her abilities allowed her to examine evidence to a degree that’s usually only possible in a lab, seeing clues that the naked, regular eye cannot see.

She is friends with Mega Matt and Duper Dave. In the world of the Occupation, Tendra has joined up with Spy Gal and fights in the resistance.

CHARACTER REDESIGN: Jerry!

Jerry "One Year Later" V.2 by Marc Lapierre

Jerry’s status at the One Year Later jump is what really kicked things off as it was so remarkably different from where we left him. That’s the fun of time jumps and my goal for all of the redesigns we do is to come up with a visual that’s equally as fun as the new status quo.

My notes to Marc were that Jerry is basically a nomad, traveling the world in search of the things he needs to destroy the Power Crystal. I did a sketch of Jerry’s head with a hood, but I didn’t really have any idea what the rest of him should look like. I knew he had a satchel to carry his stuff and the Power Crystal, but that was it. Marc came back with this:

Jerry "One Year Later" V.1 by Marc Lapierre

That was of course excellent, but upon looking at it I realized what I’d really been seeing in my head was someone more covered and anonymous–like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable. I asked Marc to make the coat longer and the boots muddier, to reflect the time he’s spent in the wilderness. That’s when Marc came up with the design you see at the top of this post and it was perfect.

More designs coming!

NEW CHARACTER: The Terrible Leslie!

by Brock Heasley on February 20th, 2014
Posted In: Uncategorized

The Terrible Leslie by Marc Lapierre

Leslie Bottoms was just a typical, down-on-his-luck, insecure Alabama geek who always seemed to arrive at the comic store just as the last issue of the hottest new issue sold out when Spy Gal’s battle with a team of Reactors lead by Gorgeous Guy spilled into his neighborhood. That’s when everything went wrong. The Reactors rifles malfunctioned and neither Spy Gal nor Gorgeous Guy seemed able to land a punch.

Spy Gal quickly deduced that Leslie Bottoms possessed the power of epic bad luck, enough to affect the environment and people around him. Leslie never wanted to be a hero, preferring instead to duck his head and avoid the trouble and trauma that seemed to always follow him, but Spy Gal had other plans. She slapped a kevlar vest on Leslie to protect him in combat situations and drafted him into the resistance!

Now one of the most powerful members of Spy Gal’s lead team, The Terrible Leslie is the whiny secret weapon the enemy never sees coming!

NEW CHARACTER: Hazmarty!

by Brock Heasley on February 13th, 2014
Posted In: Uncategorized

Lots of new characters and redesigns with One Year Later, and this is where we tell you about them! Based on the comments underneath his first appearance, today’s is a popular one.

Hazmarty by Marc Lapierre

HAZMARTY

Imagine if Homer Simpson got superpowers and super ugly and gross. Bill Updike was just a working stiff whose job was to push the right button at the Nuclear Power Plant just outside Fresno, CA until the Battle of Fresno changed his life forever. When, at the early stages of the battle’s expansion, a couple of supers mistakenly took their fight to the Plant and damaged some of the most crucial and hazardous areas of the plant, Bill was tasked with going in to seal off a radiation leak that threatened to blow the whole place sky high—taking Fresno right along with it. An accident of superpowers and nuclear energy stripped away Bill’s skin and muscle and most of his internal organs, leaving him a living, mutated skeleton in a vat of liquid radiation contained only by his hazmat suit.

Mega Matt named Bill Hazmarty after noting his resemblance to Marty McFly when he first travels back in time in the movie Back to the Future. Bill resents the name, preferring to hold on to any of the last vestiges of his humanity he can grab. He much prefers Bill and will yell at anyone who calls him Hazmarty—which is everyone. Bill’s needs and wants are pretty simple and he’s known for being kind of a dunce, but at the end of the day he has a good heart and wants to help humanity however he can, even if he has no hope for himself.

The Redesigned Soviet Sam and Spy Gal!

by Brock Heasley on February 5th, 2014
Posted In: Uncategorized

One Year Later, as I’ve mentioned before, means a lot of design work for both old characters and new. In fact, that design work is still an ongoing concern. Sam and Spy Gal were the first two Marc worked on because they were the first to show up, in SF 564.

For Sam, I wanted more a Sean Connery look for him, crossed with Col. Tigh on Battlestar Galactica (the new one). I’m a huge Battlestar fan and I don’t mind saying the primary inspiration for the One Year Later storyline was the Season 2 cliffhanger. Sam’s white eyepatch is a nod to that, and a reference you’ll get if you’ve seen the show (but that I won’t spoil here). Marc wasn’t too sure about the eyepatch being white and that’s why you see different versions of it alongside the sketch. Since it was an homage, it was the one detail I insisted on.

Actually, that’s not true. Another detail no one has noticed yet are the three little jewels across the top of the eyepatch. There’s a reason for them, but I’m not ready to reveal it.

Everything else was Marc’s idea, from the Russian bear theme to Sam’s new hat (I wanted him bald, but Marc proved right away how cool a new hat could be) to how to incorporate a more militaristic look into Sam’s uniform. It’s a radical redesign, but I think I already love it more than his old look.

Spy Gal was a bit tougher. The short hair was an idea I had for a long time and I even drew up a sketch to show what I was thinking, but even then I wasn’t sure. I liked the longer haired Spy Gal we’d been getting from Marc up until now. Marc was the one who convinced me to just pull the trigger on the hair, partly because the longer hair is just tougher to draw, but also because the short hair just makes her look tougher. It does make sense for her as a character. She’s more no-nonsense now and I don’t really see her spending the time in the morning to look just right. It fits her new lifestyle.

For the clothes, again it’s a more militaristic look. In all ways except one. After wearing cargo pants for the last few chapters, Marc brought back Spy Gal’s tights. It’s a small detail and probably not one anybody noticed, but it speaks to her more superheroic roots, which is important to maintain.

More sketches to come as more characters are revealed!
