Behind the Scenes of SF 530!

by Marc Lapierre on August 28th, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

Greetings, Fogeys Fans! For today’s installment of The SuperFogeys, Brock asked me to play around with a different style for the flashback montage in panel 1. We’ve done may flashbacks before, usually drawn in the same style as the regular story only rendered them in grey tones. This flashback, however comes at a moment in the story that promises to have HUGE lasting implications for everybody in the SF Universe. A rougher, more visceral style was required to help add to the impact of this scene.

Anyone who follows me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter knows I like playing with different styles and materials for my sketching. I am always up for trying new pens and papers. Believe it or not, I’ve even drawn on sandpaper and a large metal blade!

For each SuperFogeys strip, I first layout the roughs in Photoshop. This allows me more speed and freedom in moving panels and figures around to make the composition just right. Once the roughs are done, I print them out on Bristol and proceed to pencil traditionally.

Pencils for SF 530

For SF 530, I branched out a bit from my usual routine. After the pencils were complete, I then laid out a sheet of grey toned paper over the pencils and inked the flashback scene using my trusty old light box and some Pigma pens. Putting aside the inked grey toned paper, I then inked the rest of the strip in my usual manor, vellum overlaid on the pencils. Lately I’ve gotten in the habit of outlining the black areas and then filling them in in Photoshop. This saves time and ink.

With the inking done, I then went back to the flashback scene. Using a couple of Prismacolor grey brush tip markers, I then shaded the piece. Next, I added white highlights to make the whole scene “pop”. This was accomplished using a white gel ballpoint pen and a white pastel pencil.

White highlights applied.

With the analog portion of the art done, I then put the elements on the scanner and brought them into Photoshop. I colored the majority of the strip in my usual fashion and then dropped in the flashback art as a separate layer, creating a layer mask to keep it in the background.

I hope you have enjoyed this little peek at how SF 530 came together. Of course, you can read the final strip right here: SF 530. Thanks for reading!

Speaking of making comics, I would be remiss if I neglected to mention that today marks what would have been Jack Kirby‘s 96th birthday! In honor of the King’s birthday, I urge everyone to contribute to the Hero Initiative, a charity that helps out the creative trailblazers who helped create some of the superhero icons we all enjoy.

A detail form Alethea's Zurida watercolor.

It was a terrific surprise this morning to find a stunning Zurida-Percy-Michelle watercolor this morning by SuperFan Alethea Lim. What you see above is just a small detail from it. If you’d like to see the whole piece and read Alethea’s thoughts on why she did the painting and what she was trying to say with it, click on over to her site right now. You must do this!

Thanks, Alethea! It’s most impressive work. (I may be biased, but still…)

SuperFogeys Origins Artist Chip Skelton Has a Kickstarter He Wants You to Know About–and Time is Running Out!

by Brock Heasley on August 1st, 2013

Hey all,

Artist and friend Chip Skelton has drawn two SuperFogeys Origins for me so far, Cellmates and Harvey the Science Rabbit, Part Two. I think we can all agree Chips combination of creepy-cool and stellar attention to detail resulted in some fairly fantastic art and storytelling. Now, he’s one of many artist contributing to a new Kickstarter book project, SPOD! – Oddities From Space Anthology. Chip even got the coveted cover artist spot! How cool is that?

Here’s the thing though, the Kickstarter is three days away from ending and they just need another £500 to seal the deal. Can it happen? I think it can. Go on over to the Kickstarter project page and check it out for yourself. Chip will forever be your monkey (no, not really) and I think you’ll be glad you did.

How to Solve Your Access Issues with the SuperFogeys Website

by Brock Heasley on July 28th, 2013
Posted In: Uncategorized

Hey all, sorry for the frustration of late with the website. I’m not entirely clear on what happened to cause the downtime and the subsequent issues we’re having with access, but I think we’re close to having it licked. One thing we’ve done already is move to a new server. Soon, we’ll be making a few other changes and in the end there will one url to rule them all.

So, this is about bookmarks. Some of you have superfogeys.webcomicsonline.com bookmarked as your access point for this site. That url no longer works, so you’ve may have found yourself unable view the site of late. Here’s how you solve this: switch your bookmark over to superfogeys.com right now. That url will always, always work, no matter what and it is our main url going forward.

For a lot of you–maybe most of you–this isn’t an issue, but for those who are having trouble, that’s the solution. Site should be lightning fast after that.

Thanks!

Believe it or not…

Hey, gang! Your friendly neighborhood Fogeys artist, Marc here! Since Brock if off enjoying a well deserved vacation, I thought I would pop in here and share some non-SuperFogeys art. One of my All Time favorite shows as a child was ‘The Greatest American Hero’. William Katt starred as Ralph Hinkley, a meek high school teacher who becomes the owner of a fantastic suit that grants the wearer unimaginable powers. However, shortly after receiving the suit from some mysterious aliens, Ralph looses the instruction manual and hilarity and adventure ensues. The incomparable Robert Culp and the stunning Connie Sellecca as FBI agent Bill Maxwell and Ralph’s lawyer/ girlfriend, Pam Davidson respectively round out an excellent cast.

This piece is my little tribute to the spirit of a show that brought many a smile was brought to my young face.

Here's a look at the pencils.

Inks done with Pigma pens.

If you like my work here, why not swing on over and “Like” my Facebook page. I’ve got all kinds of fun stuff posted over there.
