Hey all, how’s it going? I’m writing this post 20 minutes before you all see the 101st strip by SuperFogeys Artist Marc Lapierre. That’s amazing.
As most of you know, Marc saved SuperFogeys from certain doom after I decided to shut down the comic–and leave all storylines unfinished–about one year ago. Just to give you some perspective, imagine if SuperFogeys 300 was the very last SuperFogeys strip… ever. Everything after that? You never would have seen it. For a few weeks, that’s what I was planning.
Enter Marc. Thanks to him, I was able to scale back my SuperFogeys duties to writer only AND the update schedule increased to twice a week for the regular strip. Marc saved The SuperFogeys. What’s more, he made it better. He draws stuff I never could, all while keeping the original spirit of the strip intact. He astonishes me.
And he’s never asked for–or recieved–a dime for it.*
I think that should change. As of today, the donate button is back. But with a twist: all donations go directly to Marc. I don’t want any of it and I won’t see any of it. You’ll be making your donation directly to Marc’s Pay Pal.

*It goes without saying that this donate button is not Marc’s idea. Not his style. However, you’re probably wondering how it is that I’ve never paid him for the work he does. Simple: like a lot of webcomics, SuperFogeys is not yet a moneymaking enterprise. I still hope one day it can be, but not yet.

I went back and forth on including a SFX. Ultimately, obviously, I opted not to do it. Not only would it have covered up Marc’s great art, but I think the visual communicates the sound just fine. As you just proved, JE!
I always wonder why aliens attack White House instead of Pentagon.
As an European, however, I’m actually quite happy that aliens go to America first. Gives us time to do… to do.. to do absolutely nothing about it?

Aliens go to America because it’s the center of the universe. Now you know!
If the aliens were actually smart they’d take out China first as it would cripple the economies of the rest of the world and if they did it right it would simultaneously give them a massive army of foot-soldiers who are already familiar with the territory.
I knew Independence Day had it all wrong. Just smush the old stuff out o the way and no need to clean up the rubble to rebuild – that’s advanced alien thinking for you.
I’m with @gnrrrg — makes a lot more sense to do that. They get to keep the garden and everything that way.
And what alien invader doesn’t love a beautiful garden?
Excellent art, wonderfully evocative and beautifully realized in the four-panel format.
That said, I have to say, at the risk of all the kids calling me a cranky pants, I am not one who cares for darker, more serious themes when I’m looking for entertainment and escape in comics – especially when a comic first attracted me by not being dark and serious. Also, the giant, epic, cosmic world-spanning story arc that draws in every super or semi-super in the comic’s pantheon is something that the corporate comics have been doing over and over for the past few years with depressing regularity, and I don’t enjoy it anymore. I think it has the tendency to be very fatiguing after the first few months and the first few giant “soul-shattering” climaxes and deaths and semi-deaths of Major Character. Also, trying to include everything on such a grand scale runs the risk of losing the focus on what I most enjoy from this comic, which is the smaller, human-scaled interactions. Much of the reason why Swifty and Sam are such favorites is simply because they are very human, very fallible and working against their own crippling weaknesses with, at times, touching courage and real heroism.
So – just my two sheckles. I hope all my trepidation is unwarranted.
I hope so too, JE. In any case, I thank you for this comment. It’s a good thing to keep in mind as I go forward with this story.
The nice thing is, I’m not crossing over with any other comics. I get to keep it tight and focused on the characters. There’s no turning back, but you offer a good reminder of what SF is really about. I think you’ll be pleased by where this story. I hope you are.
We knew this was coming ever since a desperate Swifty kept popping in and out of the time stream.
Perhaps.
But Swifty’s never been trying to save the world. He’s just trying to save one soul, one love, one possible happy ending at the very tail end of his very long life, and do it totally on his own terms. Ultimately, I think that’s really all he wants to do. And the tragedy that, to me, dwarfs all the grand call to adventure, the giant enemy space fleet, the crushed marble and crushed lives on Pennsylvania Avenue and the giant-chested costumed heroes that will, of course, rise theatrically to meet it amid epic special effects and explosions is that he seems doomed to fail. Star Maiden’s true nature, at least as we’ve seen it revealed in flashback, is a flint-hearted vindictive sociopath who is a stranger to the simple concept of human love. Something in her was maimed very early on. Now, it seems it would take a miracle to get her back among the angels.

Berenger: Oh, but now you will tell me that God’s reach is farther than man’s.”
Cadfael: It had better be. Otherwise we’re all lost.
So – there it is.
Now that’s how you make an entrance.

As demeaning as it may sound, no one draws dirt like Marc. Seriously, I could probably do with a picture of Marc’s dirt on my office wall.
