Hey SuperFans,
I don’t normally use this forum to express any political, religious or social views, but there’s a movement happening today to “spread the word to end the word”–the R-Word. You can click right here to take the pledge. I’ve also written a short blog explaining my feelings about the word and why it’s so personal to me. Of course, if you’re a SuperFogeys reader, you already know why. Here’s a snippet of my blog:
Language is an every-evolving form of communication. Over time, word meanings can shift and what once was clinical can become derogatory and damaging. This has happened with the R-word.
For those who don’t know: The R-word is “Retard” or “Retarded.”
My daughter Cami has special needs. She has both physical and mental handicaps. She is also beautiful and sweet and perfect. Like so many children and adults like her, her life is hard enough without having to endure name-calling. But, the use of the R-word goes beyond that, doesn’t it? It’s not just a name. We hear the R-word used in casual speech all the time.
“That’s retarded.”
I’ve heard it said so many times in reference to anything from a bad movie to an ugly shirt. The meaning is understood: anything described as “retarded” is bad. But “retarded” is so much more than that… Read the rest right here.
Thanks.
Is Cap perhaps the reason that Dr. Rocket hasn’t spilled the beans?
Rather sad that neither of them realise how Cap would feel about finding out Jerry and Dr Rocket were responsible for Tom’s supposed death. I think the results would be far worse than the giant robot reveal.
Good point.
I think it’s fair to say that’s very much on both their minds.
Ooh! Princess Bride!
Ha! Yes, that was kind of going through my head…
This is getting good, still a bit brash talking like that while the door is still open.
Yeah, a bit. But what are villains if not brash?
I would hardly think it’s a true impasse.
Rocket is dying. He has zero to truly lose. That alone gives him the edge.
I like that point. Seems Dr. Rocket has forgotten it, though.
And if I recall correctly, he also has the hots for Spy Gal.
I’m sure this is something Jerry will use against him. Maybe that will be the ultimate villainy of Jerome Klein—the defeat of the [truly?] redeemed Dr. Rocket. He’s already gone too far, and a person like that doesn’t really know where to stop, or how.
I don’t really think Jerry is that smart. For Jerry to have any ultimate leverage here, he would have to admit that Tom is still alive. That would then give Rocket his daughter’s happiness as a vulnerability to exploit, as he’d be able to restore Tom to her at some point on condition of Rocket’s cooperation/silence. BUT – it would also give Rocket all the motivation he would need to be Jerry’s enemy. No, like – REAL enemy. Like, “Wilbur – let’s talk.” kind of enemy. Frankly, I think Jerry’s been amateurish throughout, because he’s never thought the whole thing through to its ultimate conclusion.
seems like everything jerry throws at dr. rocket he has a nice counter…ultimately dr. rocket will come out on top in an argument like this…he is the villian after all it’s to be expected!
daaamn, thrice, always dominating the conversation..
He’s such a chatterbox.
Man, that Thrice just really crowds a conversation, it’s a shame he’s so talkative.
I love the flow of this strip. As I read it I found the volume in my head got louder until the end it was a shouting match. The dialog is just perfect, it really feeds the emotion of what’s going on and Marc’s awesome art brings those emotions to the characters faces. Y’all have one awesome union going on here that had really created a great webcomic that really needs to be animated into a show.
One of the things that I find fascinating about this is that he still wants Dr. Rocket to think that Tom is dead. This keeps that hanging over Dr. Rocket’s head and keeps him where he needs him to be. It’s all about leverage in these situations. Now it comes down to which one is willing to take a sacrifice on how the ones they love think of them and make the first revealing move. With Dr. Rocket dying if the charade goes on much longer he would be my choice for leading candidate to spill the beans first, wanting to leave with a clean slate.
Thanks so much, Todd. This strip was a really juggling act of dialogue and art. Marc and I went back and forth on how best to handle it. Pleases me to no end that you experienced the exact effect I was going for!
Poor Thrice….. Trapped in the Jay and Silent Bob conundrum. I can’t wait til his suppressor gives out and he goes on a rampage telling everyone EXACTLY what he’s been thinking about them all these years. Behold the fury of alliteration!
I like that Marc is so true to Thrice’s facial features even though he’s pulling from a few different artists. Very well done, Marc.
Good one today.
