Movie Review: THE AVENGERS

by Brock Heasley on May 7th, 2012
Posted In: Uncategorized

As I write this it’s just been revealed that Marvel’s THE AVENGERS has a set a new opening weekend box office record by a wiiiiiide margin. $200.3 million. Take that in. Not only is an Avengers movie actually real, it’s hit the zeitgeist.

Well I guess so! The movie plays like gangbusters with an audience. I don’t know when the last time was that I was in a theater where the audience responded so audibly and INVOLUNTARILY to what was happening on screen. Writer/Director Joss Whedon is a man who knows how to weave and twist a scene to both play into and subvert our expectations to great effect. In other words, he knows storytelling. There are moments in THE AVENGERS that demand reaction, and more often than not my reaction was joy.

I’m not going to spoil a single great moment for those of you that haven’t seen the movie yet, but when you see them, you’ll know. Sometimes it’s an action beat, sometimes it’s a line of dialogue. It’s always brilliant.

Good thing too because this is by no means a perfect movie. I still don’t fully understand villain Loki’s motivation and plan. The movie has no second act. A couple of characters–Hawkeye and Maria Hill–are pretty much non-entities. Nothing about the aliens that populate the film is distinct or driven by character.

But, incredibly, none of that matters. Of course, not one of the movies that preceded THE AVENGERS were perfect either: Iron Man, Iron Man II, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. But none of those movies sucked. And now, pretty much all of them have been surpassed by THE AVENGERS. (I hold a soft spot in my heart for Thor.)

Everyone at the marathon got a souvenir cup with topper. My wife and I managed to get a full set!

I should say that this is not my final word on this movie. I saw it at the end of a 14 hour Marvel Movie Marathon at my local theater. Let me tell you, it is possible to become numb to watching guys hit each other. I was bleary-eyed (but amped) as I watched THE AVENGERS. I think a revisit is in order and I won’t have final thoughts about the quality of the film until then.

I’m keeping this short because you already know you want to see this (and if you don’t then enjoy not grinning like an idiot) and I don’t want to ruin it. Stop reading now if you haven’t gotten out to the multiplex yet.

But, for those of us that have seen it, I’m declaring the comments on this post a SPOILER ZONE. Let’s share our favorite moments and get our geek on and talk about that mid-credits sequence and what it could mean!

The Big Holiday Wars Giveaway!

by Brock Heasley on April 25th, 2012
Posted In: Uncategorized

My buddy Scott King runs an excellent webcomic by the name of Holiday Wars (along with two-time SuperFogeys Origins artist Michael Odom!) and he has something REALLY special lined up for the next three weeks that I thought you guys just had to know about. Here’s Scott:

HOLIDAY WARS launches GIVEAWAY!

To celebrate the launch of “Holiday Wars” Book 2 we are doing a massive three week contest where we will be giving away some awesome daily prizes; including a Kindle, and a Nook Simple Touch.

“Our readers have stuck around for almost two years now and we thought this was a nice way we could give back to them,” Holiday Wars writer and creator Scott King said. “Sure we are doing traditional prizes like gift cards and ebook readers, but I’m particularly excited about giving away copies of Scrivener and Manga Studio since HOLIDAY WARS was partially created in both programs.”

A full schedule and list of prizes can be found here: www.holiday-wars.com/pics/prizes.jpg

In addition to the giveaway contest, we are also launching a new website and a Kickstarter to fund the printing of Book 1 of “Holiday Wars.”

About HOLIDAY WARS:
“Holiday Wars” is an ongoing webcomic about a teenage girl named Tegan Cassidy who discovers that the personification of holidays are real. The story takes place in our world and features well known holidays like Santa, The Easter Bunny, and April Fools as well as smaller observances like Ask A Stupid Question Day and Black Friday. The comic is free to read at www.Holiday-Wars.com.

About Scott King:
Scott King was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Ocean City, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree in film from Towson University, and his M.F.A. in film from American University. “DAD! A Documentary Graphic Novel,” King’s first book was published in Fall ’09. He is also the creator and writer of “Holiday Wars.” In addition to his work in comics, King is also a part-time faculty member at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

New Interview with Brock on TGT!

by Brock Heasley on April 23rd, 2012
Posted In: Uncategorized

Hey everybody, this past weekend I spoke with Kurt Sasso over at TGT Media about all things SuperFogeys. This is one of the most in-depth interviews I’ve ever done. Kurt really let me have it with some deep thematic questions about the nature of growing old and how writing the SuperFogeys may be changing who I am at a fundamental level. All that and some great discussion about the new Invasion arc and what’s coming.

This really is a must listen. In fact, as I was writing this, @seltcentent on Twitter just told me that it was the best interview he’s ever heard on TGT.

Decide for yourself right here. Enjoy!

New Review of The SuperFogeys @ WebcomicZ!

by Brock Heasley on April 12th, 2012
Posted In: Uncategorized

Hey everybody, just came across this excellent review of The SuperFogeys this week and, needless to say, Marc and I are extremely flattered by the high praise. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a proper review–and I think this is the first one since Marc took over art duties.

Big thanks to Caitlin Hart, who does not hold back her praise and steers clear of the spoilers! Check out the review for yourself right here at WebcomicZ!

Do You Enjoy Reading The SuperFogeys?

by Brock Heasley on April 9th, 2012
Posted In: Uncategorized

Hey all, how’s it going? I’m writing this post 20 minutes before you all see the 101st strip by SuperFogeys Artist Marc Lapierre. That’s amazing.

As most of you know, Marc saved SuperFogeys from certain doom after I decided to shut down the comic–and leave all storylines unfinished–about one year ago. Just to give you some perspective, imagine if SuperFogeys 300 was the very last SuperFogeys strip… ever. Everything after that? You never would have seen it. For a few weeks, that’s what I was planning.

Enter Marc. Thanks to him, I was able to scale back my SuperFogeys duties to writer only AND the update schedule increased to twice a week for the regular strip. Marc saved The SuperFogeys. What’s more, he made it better. He draws stuff I never could, all while keeping the original spirit of the strip intact. He astonishes me.

And he’s never asked for–or recieved–a dime for it.*

I think that should change. As of today, the donate button is back. But with a twist: all donations go directly to Marc. I don’t want any of it and I won’t see any of it. You’ll be making your donation directly to Marc’s Pay Pal.

I know times are tough, so whatever you can do is greatly appreciated. You can donate right now by clicking on the Donate Button (sorry, can’t link to it here) in the left side bar on the site. I know I will.

Thanks to all of you. Here’s to many more years of SuperFogeys to come!

*It goes without saying that this donate button is not Marc’s idea. Not his style. However, you’re probably wondering how it is that I’ve never paid him for the work he does. Simple: like a lot of webcomics, SuperFogeys is not yet a moneymaking enterprise. I still hope one day it can be, but not yet.
