FINALLY!
Can I just say that I’m glad to finally be done with this extended origin story? This is by far the longest mini-arc I’ve attempted within a cha
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY UPDATE
For those of you just joining us…The SuperFogeys have secured a spot in Th3rd World’s Free Comic Book Day offering. (FCBD is on Saturday May 2nd this year–head to your local comic book for a grip of free comics.) It’s a fun little page. Basically, Star Maiden gives the reader a tour of Valhalla. Probably the first and last time I’m breaking the fourth wall.
I’ve been working steadily on it and I’m happy to report that it’s fully pencilled and scripted at this point, and partially inked. I should be able to make Friday’s deadline, fingers crossed. Make sure your local comic shop has ordered plenty of copies of Th3rd World’s FCBD offering (which also includes a 20-page preview of the phenomenal “Stuff of Legend”), as that’s the only way you’re gonna see this thing!
LOST AND BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Has anybody else been watching these shows?? They are firing on all cylinders and I can’t remember the last time I was so excited to see a friggin’ TV show. Actually, that’s not fair. We’ve recently gone through a golden age of television–a time when the quality of writing and presentation on television was surpassing what’s been happening in film. We’re at the end of that era now with so many of the great shows either off the air or soon to conclude.
Case in point: LOST and Battlestar Galactica, two shows which transcend their genre trappings and reach for something greater. Only 5 eps of BSG left, and about a season and half of LOST. If you haven’t seen either one of them, well…you go enjoy your NCIS and that guy that puts on his sunglasses a lot. The rest of you…are you as jazzed as I am?
Next Week:
The Money Man pays a visit to Swifty in SuperFogeys Origins. On Thursday, the Fogeys pay their last respects to Dr. Rocket. It can only get happier from here, folks!
pter and, while, it’s been a lot of fun, I was starting to forget how to draw the Fogeys! Plus, the main story has been on hold this whole time and I’m really anxious to get the awesomeness that fills out the back end of this chapter (currently slated to wrap up around episode 212).
My sense is that everyone really enjoyed the origin of Captain Spectacular and Dr. Rocket, so my hope is that the ending didn’t disappoint. In this strip and the last a lot of ideas were introduced that, had I more fully explored them, could have had another 12 strips dedicated to them. What really happened to CS and DR after coming to earth and Dr. Rocket’s time as a hero and his eventual full turn towards evil is a story all its own–think of it as the “Origin, Pt. 2.” Good fodder for an installment of “SuperFogeys Origins” should you guys demand it. For now, I leave that part of the story to your imagination.
It was nice getting to draw CS as an old man again in the last couple of panels. The very last panel, in particular, is something that holds a lot of meaning for me. I scripted that last panel with a much different visual, but after drawing and redrawing my original idea–a close up of CS’s eyes as a single tear falls from his eyes–I finally came to realize that it just wasn’t right. The way the last panel is now, with CS looking up the sky, that’s something much more interesting, I think.
I know, I know. Where’s the peeing pig, right? I’ll shut-up now.
(If you’ve been waiting til now to read the whole origin in one go, start here.)
THE BALLAD OF DR. ROCKET
I’ve got lyrics, anyone interested in going ukelele on it? Guitar? Banjo? It’s got a rap verse, so that’s awesome, right? At least the lyrics will appear this time next week, but if anyone out there is brave enough, it would be so awesome to attach a You Tube or an mp3 of the actual song. Sadly, my skils as a musician are even MORE deficient than my lyricism.
DISNEYLAND
I’ve just finished SuperFogeys 195, so what am I going to do now? I’m goin’ to Disneyland. Be back sometime Saturday. Til then, don’t hate me for not being around so much.
Next Week:
Tuesday kicks off a brand new origin story with “The Society of Heroes!” Then, be back here on Thursday to, yes, see Captain Emo and the Healer perform a duet!
